(CBS) It's a mind-boggling story, one that sounds more like a bad movie than reality. But it happened. In the two decades after World War II, 10,000 English children were sent to Australia, reports 60 Minutes II Correspondent Bob Simon. Many were mistreated and abused. All were lied to.
The story begins in Britain after World War II - a nation victorious but battered, broke, and burdened by overflowing children's homes. Many of the kids were put there by families too poor to raise them. What happened next is almost unfathomable in civilized countries or in modern times.

The British government, in collaboration with churches and charities, developed a secret plan to clear out these children's homes; a plan which has only recently been uncovered. The kids were told that they would be adopted by loving families in Australia. And they were shipped off by the thousands. It was as simple as that. The first ship to sail in 1947 was the SS Asturias. Cargo: 147 boys and girls. John Hennessy, 11 years old at the time, was one of those children. Only a few weeks before it sailed, some priests and bureaucrats showed up at his children's institution in England. They were rounding up kids to go to Australia. "We thought Australia was down the street or it was around the corner," says Hennessy. "How did we know it was on the other side of the world? Well, anyway, they, they came with the stories, you know, that there's fruits there, plenty of fruits." Like many children, Mary Molloy didn't quite grasp what was being proposed: "I just thought, you know, we're going away for a while." All across Britain, at children's homes and institutions, kids were being told the same thing: you're going to a new land, a new life, a new family. Many were illegitimate children. Many were dropped off by single mothers who'd fallen on hard times. But that's not what the kids were told. Tony Jones, who at the time was in a boys' home in Malvern, England, was told that his parents had died: "They said, 'You're an orphan now.' And I was an orphan." That's what they told all the kids, that they were orphans. That there was nobody for them in Britain. Over the next 20 years, 10,000 children, somas young as 3, none older than 15, would depart unaccompanied for their new homes in Australia. Six weeks and 12,000 miles later, the children arrived at the Fremantle docks in Western Australia. They looked around for the fruit trees, the kangaroos, the adoptive families they were told would be waiting for them. But there was none of that here. There was something quite different. Not long after they disembarked, they received a lecture from a man in black, the archbishop of Perth. Hennessy remembers the man's speech: "He said, 'We welcome you to Australia. We need you for white stock.' Because at this stage, the 'white Australia' policy was on. And we didn't know that we were part of the scheme to - to populate Australia with the - the white people. And the archbishop says, 'The reason why we do [is] because we are terrified of the Asian hordes!' Course, we didn't understand that." These children were a commodity to a continent that was terrified of being overwhelmed by Asia. They had, in essence, been exported by a nation that had a surplus of white people. Afterwards, the children's fingerprints were taken and they were herded into lines. Says Hennessy: "They grabbed the girls from their brothers. Brothers from their sisters, screaming. And I can still hear the screams today." These children, who'd been plucked from institutions in Britain, were now trucked to all over Australia. Where? To institutions. No parents were waiting for them - just picks and shovels. John Hennessy was sent to a place called Bindoon, an institution run by the Christian Brothers, an order of Catholic monks 60 miles from civilization in the sweltering bushland of Western Australia. Bindoon was a home and school for boys. But this was no Boys Town, and education was not the priority. The priority was construction. Brother Francis Keaney, an imposing, white-haired Irishman who ran the place, was obsessed with building the largest Catholic institution in Western Australia. He used his charges as labor. From sunrise to sunset, the boys built Brother Keaney's shrine, with no shoes, and no questions asked. Bindoon is a real school now, an agricultural college. But it's still run by the Christian Brothers. And old boys are not welcome, particularly not when they're accompanied by newsmen. When Bob Simon went back with Hennessy, who helped build Bindoon, they were kicked off the premises. The Christian Brothers are not eager to showcase their past as users and abusers of child labor. "They got us dirt cheap," says Norman Johnston, another boy who helped build Bindoon. "We might as well have been slaves. And, you know, we endured all of that when we didn't have to." For these children, there was nowhere to run. At the Fairbridge institution, sponsored by the Church of England, Tony Jones tried to escape whenever he could. He once made it as far as the docks where the children had first arrived. Says ones: "I got down to the beach. I remember looking all over the ocean, and I asked this couple, 'Which way is England?' If there was land all the way across, I would have walked there. I would have walked there." The food at the institutions seemed to have been cooked up in a Dickens novel. At Bindoon, the boys were so hungry one Sunday, 12-year-old John Hennessy led a raid on the vineyard out back. They enjoyed their grapes, but after mass the next morning, Brother Keaney was in a rage. He'd learned of the raid, and he called out for his leading suspect. Then the man whipped him. "He stripped me naked," he says. "In front of 50 boys, put me across the chair and nearly flogged me to death. I've-I've-I've got medical advice that that's where I got the stutter from." He had never stuttered before that day, and has ever since. The children say that floggings and beatings were part of a daily routine. The nightly routine with the Christian Brothers included priestly visits to the children's beds. The brothers were taking away boys who were less than 10 years old. Hugh McConnell was 9 years old. One night, a bad storm hit Castledare, his children's home run by the Christian Brothers. Terrified that the world was coming to an end, Hugh ran outside and hid under a tree, where a Christian Brother found him. The man invited McConnell into his bed, where the boy fell asleep quickly. Later that night, the priest raped him. There was no one to go to. Certainly not the Australian government, which was the legal guardian of the children. "The state supposedly were to be looking after us," says Johnston. "In the nine years I was institutionalized in Australia, I have never been spoken to by a child welfare officer. These Christian Brothers had us for what they wanted in those institutions. And they did with us what they would." The head of the Christian Brothers in Western Australia, Tony Shanahan, admits that there was abuse, but he also suggests that some of the stories may have been exaggerated. A British government inquiry last year was more critical, saying that what happened at institutions run by the Christian Brothers in Western Australia was of "a quite exceptional depravity." In 1993, the Christian Brothers, responding to a lawsuit, officially apologized to the child migrants and paid reparations totaling $2.5 million dollars to 250 who'd been abused at their institutions. The girls, who'd been sent to different places, suffered very little sexual abuse compared to the boys, but many were beaten, and all were exploited as free labor. The shipments of both boys and girls stopped suddenly in 1967. The British simply didn't have any more children available for export. But the 10,000 already in Australia? Only five - not 5,000 - were ever adopted. Few had birth certificates or documents of any kind. It seems their motherland wanted them to disappear without a trace. Mary Mollogrew up in an institution outside Sydney. When she graduated into the real world and applied for a passport, she was in for a surprise. "The only way I could get a passport was to become a naturalized Australian," says Molloy. "I thought I was. Now, to me, that was crazy. I've been out here since I was 9. I was brought out here. And yet, I wasn't acknowledged as an Australian. And yet, according to Britain, I didn't live there anymore. So, where was I?" For decades, Britain was able to forget about the children it threw away. For decades, the children believed what they were told, that they were orphans. But just a few years ago, these lost children - now lost adults scattered all over Australia - were stunned to learn that none of this was true. They weren't orphans at all. The governments of Great Britain and Australia, the Catholic Church and the Church of England had not only exploited and abused these 10,000. They had conned the kids for 50 years.

"The 'Madeleine case' has not yet gone past the investigation stage," it said in its ruling, adding that the request had been refused to protect the rights of the suspects.
Police have named Madeleine's parents, 39-year-old doctors Gerry and Kate McCann, as the main suspects in the disappearance of their daughter from her bedroom while the family was holidaying in southern Portugal in May. She was three at the time.
Portuguese and foreign media have reported contradictory rumours about the inquiry and the case against the couple.
Police meanwhile have provided no information about their suspicions, in line with Portuguese legal procedure.
They have presented their formal case against the couple to prosecutors, who submitted it to the investigating magistrate.
The magistrate has 10 days to decide what further lines of inquiry to pursue.
The McCanns have been under virtual siege from the media since their return to the village of Rothley, central England, shortly after they were named as suspects.
The McCanns continue to protest their innocence.
Madeleine was sleeping in the same room as her younger twin brother and sister at the resort of Praia da Luz when she disappeared on May 3 while her parents enjoyed a night with friends at a nearby tapas bar.
She would have celebrated her fourth birthday on May 12.

§ 2256. Definitions for chapter
How Current is This?
For the purposes of this chapter, the term—
(1) “minor” means any person under the age of eighteen years;
(2)
(A) Except as provided in subparagraph (B), “sexually explicit conduct” means actual or simulated—
(i) sexual intercourse, including genital-genital, oral-genital, anal-genital, or oral-anal, whether between persons of the same or opposite sex, or lascivious simulated sexual intercourse where the genitals, breast, or pubic area of any person is exhibited;
(ii) graphic or lascivious simulated;
(I) bestiality;
(II) masturbation; or
(III) sadistic or masochistic abuse; or
(iii) graphic or simulated lascivious exhibition of the genitals or pubic area of any person;
(3) “producing” means producing, directing, manufacturing, issuing, publishing, or advertising;
(4) “organization” means a person other than an individual;
(5) “visual depiction” includes undeveloped film and videotape, and data stored on computer disk or by electronic means which is capable of conversion into a visual image;
(6) “computer” has the meaning given that term in section 1030 of this title;
(7) “custody or control” includes temporary supervision over or responsibility for a minor whether legally or illegally obtained;
(8) “child pornography” means any visual depiction, including any photograph, film, video, picture, or computer or computer-generated image or picture, whether made or produced by electronic, mechanical, or other means, of sexually explicit conduct, where—
(A) the production of such visual depiction involves the use of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct;
(B) such visual depiction is a digital image, computer image, or computer-generated image that is, or is indistinguishable from, that of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct; or
(C) such visual depiction has been created, adapted, or modified to appear that an identifiable minor is engaging in sexually explicit conduct.
(9) “identifiable minor”—
(A) means a person—
(i)
(I) who was a minor at the time the visual depiction was created, adapted, or modified; or
(II) whose image as a minor was used in creating, adapting, or modifying the visual depiction; and
(ii) who is recognizable as an actual person by the person’s face, likeness, or other distinguishing characteristic, such as a unique birthmark or other recognizable feature; and
(B) shall not be construed to require proof of the actual identity of the identifiable minor.
(10) “graphic”, when used with respect to a depiction of sexually explicit conduct, means that a viewer can observe any part of the genitals or pubic area of any depicted person or animal during any part of the time that the sexually explicit conduct is being depicted; and
(11) the term “indistinguishable” used with respect to a depiction, means virtually indistinguishable, in that the depiction is such that an ordinary person viewing the depiction would conclude that the depiction is of an actual minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct. This definition does not apply to depictions that are drawings, cartoons, sculptures, or paintings depicting minors or adults.

My life insurance
Last night, some of my sources in UK told me to be careful. Others were more clear and advised me to ask for Police protection, because I'm dealing with “something very powerful” that “isn’t exactly happy” with the news I published in the last 24 hours, at Gazeta Digital. Maureen glanced out the window of her home. Her residential street had been transformed. Police lights cast an eerie blue and blood-red wash over the prim post-war facades of the houses. Television lights flared. Firefighters, cops and volunteers, 300 of them, some from as far away as Bucks County in neighboring Pennsylvania, gathered into platoons, waiting for the order to take their search for the little girl in ever-widening arcs through the backyards and weedlots of Hamilton. Megan’s slaying was a particularly horrific crime, and news of it shocked the community where the pretty blonde girl with the gap-toothed smile lived and died. But the horror went far beyond Hamilton.
Throughout the state, people demanded that something be done. There had to be some mechanism to warn them when a dangerous sexual predator was on the loose in a community. After all, people -- parents, children, schoolteachers, police-- all had a right to know when such an animal lived in their midst, didn't they?

For those deemed least likely to resume their criminal behavior, only the local authorities would be notified. Those considered a moderate risk would have their names circulated among police, local schools and community groups, and for those considered the most dangerous, a public alarm would be sounded once they were released back into the community.
On the surface, the law seemed to present a reasonable and reassuring answer to a real danger, and it was quickly embraced by the state's then-attorney general, Deborah Poritz (now chief justice of the New Jersey State Supreme Court), by then-governor Christine Todd Whitman (now the head of the federal Environmental Protection Agency) and by leaders in both houses of the state legislature.
And so, within weeks of its introduction, thanks in part to the moving testimony and unflagging support of Maureen Kanka, Megan’s Law was overwhelmingly adopted. Two years later, when Zimmer went on to Congress, he saw to it that a version of the New Jersey statutes became federal law.
But from the beginning there were those who warned that the law had serious flaws. For one thing, early studies, such as one conducted in Los Angeles County, indicated that information disseminated about convicted sex offenders was often wrong. Real, hard-core pedophiles often gave authorities bogus addresses or moved without warning, making the registration effectively useless, the Los Angeles study found.
Prosecutors, noting that the vast majority of sexual offenses, particularly those against children, were solved only when the offender confessed, warned that the laws could backfire. Threatening accused molesters with lifelong registration made it that much more difficult to force an admission of guilt, obligating prosecutors to risk losing cases and exposing victims to additional trauma at trial, they said.
What's more, many offenders had been convicted or pleaded guilty in the past to less serious offenses, crimes that did not rise to the level of Megan's Law notification. Notably, the name Jesse Timmendequas, Megan's killer, would not have been publicly released if the sex offenders’ registry had existed at the time of the girl's death. His prior offenses would not have warranted widespread community notification. A popular saying among prosecutors in New Jersey's 26 counties is, "Megan's Law would not have saved Megan."

CHILD PORNOGRAPHY--THE WAY IT IS
Child pornography is more or less a bye product of WW2, and the resulting technologies , and advancements in communications . As well as the mixing of cultures and ideas that come from increased travel. They say like minds have a way of seeking each other out, this is most certainly true of pedophiles , and those that seek CP. I can only guess as to the first publication of CP but I would not be surprised if it did not pre date 1900. Almost the same can be said of Kiddy Porn movies, most likely some were made in the early 1900's. Again , almost impossible for most to get their hands on. I would be almost right in saying that Child porn was as hard to find pre WW2 as gold, for most people.
Thankfully such material was scarce and hard to come bye. I wont go into 30year old + males marrying 8 year old girls a 100+ years ago , but in some countries this is still acceptable , where child porn would get your hand cut off. Hmmm a loop hole or what ?
Post WW2. With increased travel throughout the world , east meats west. With south east Asia having much more freedom in sexual behavior and a more tolerant attitude to sexual deviancy . It doesn't take long for the West to get a taste for such freedom . A similar attitude is taking place in certain parts of Europe , which in the 70's will be referred to as the sexual revolution of the 60's. A lot of experimenting in drugs , music , and cultural behavior was taking place. Some good , some very bad. This was the breeding ground for organized pedophile activity and the resulting CP industry, in both Europe and Asia. The main country in Asia exporting CP was J****, with many countries in Europe doing the same.
Production of CP would seem to have come a little late in the USA with many states banning such material early on. Unfortunately demand for such material has a way of finding people prepared to supply it. This has led to children being kidnapped , raped in the production of the material, and then murdered. This has become a serious problem , and is most likely understated by authorities. With most countries banning CP in Europe , a similar problem of murdered and kidnapped children being used to make CP is raising its ugly head in Europe.
To say that the internet was a God send for pedophiles is an understatement worthy of a medal. The timing could not have been better. With country after country banning CP and bringing in tougher laws regarding the interaction of adults and children , pedophiles were being driven underground. Then came the internet, here was a new way to recruit people , and spread the message, trade pictures and best of all , become a world wide phenomenon. No longer bound by language, or borders , or time or distance. This brought about a boom in pedophile and CP activity, a boom that went from the early 90's to almost 2000. This was a time for unprecedented growth , and the creation of an organized campaign for desensitizing the general public to the plight of children, and the increase in the spread of CP, and related propaganda .
With this growth came money, smarter people, and power. Pedophiles control more of the internet than most people could imagine. They have created a organization , with leaders , a hierarchy if you will. And operate like terrorist cells , if one cell is caught, there are two to take its place, and only the leaders of each cell know each other and are known to the cell manager, whom may manage up to 10 cells. All this is done on the net with very few members meeting , except at the higher levels where the big $ start to come in. Then things are run more like a corporation , than a criminal organization.
CP is big business , bringing in 100's of millions of dollars to those that control it. With this kind of money at stake , you can bet that these people are not going away without a fight. More and more people are taking part in supplying material for the Cp market, home videos , computers , home editing, and cable accesses to the internet, are just making things easier for the pedophiles and want to bees. The fight against them is poorly organized, and to me, I dont think that most law enforcement agencies through out the world realize just how big , and how bad things have become.
The simple truth is that there is a war waging against our children, a war that 99% of the populace of the world does not know about, and as it would seem, dont want to know about. Evil is knocking on the doors of our children, in every corner of the world, there is no longer anywhere to hide , the internet has given the monsters a way to reach your children even when the doors are locked. There is nowhere to hide. But you can fight , if you wish. To save the children.
